(Dan Tri) – American billionaire Elon Musk raised the question of why the NATO military alliance continues to exist after its main rival, the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact, have long since disintegrated.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk agreed with American investor David Sacks, who argued that after the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO no longer had a reason to exist, but continued to expand the alliance.

In a post on social network

`As a cycle, NATO expansion creates hostility (with adversaries) and this continues to justify further alliance expansion,` he said.

Afterwards, billionaire Musk commented: `Exactly. I always wonder why NATO continues to exist even when its opponent and reason for existence, the Warsaw Pact, has dissolved.`

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO continued to admit Eastern European countries that were once part of the Soviet Union, or former members of the Warsaw Pact, as well as the Baltic and Balkan countries.

Most recently, the two Nordic countries Finland and Sweden became the newest members of NATO after Russia launched a military campaign in Ukraine in 2022.

Russia has repeatedly opposed NATO expansion, considering it a national security threat.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused NATO of being a `tool of confrontation` and deterrence against Russia.

Mr. Musk’s statement faced some criticism, including from members of NATO.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs replied to Mr. Musk that the reason NATO was established, exists and is maintained is because of Russia and a number of countries that the alliance considers `adversaries of the free world`.

Meanwhile, US congressman Adam Kinzinger asked why the Washington government did not review billionaire Musk’s status as a contractor.

In addition, critics say that NATO was established for the purpose of protecting the security of its members, not just targeting the Soviet Union or the Warsaw Pact.

NATO was established in 1949 to provide a collective security mechanism to counter the Soviet Union at the start of the Cold War.

Before that, Mr. Musk many times made controversial statements within the West.

However, he repeatedly said that Washington should stop providing aid to Ukraine because this would only prolong the war and not help Kiev further.

`Aid will not help Ukraine, prolonging the war will not help Ukraine. Letting those boys (soldiers) die for nothing is not right and this needs to stop,` he urged.
