Kyrylo Budanov, director of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency, warned on March 31 that the railway line Russia is building connecting Crimea with mainland Russia could cause `serious problems` for Kiev.

Mr. Budanov added that he believes Ukraine will be able to solve this problem but did not detail the plan.

Moscow has been building a railway between the Russian port city of Rostov-on-Don and Crimea, as an alternative to the Crimea Bridge after the structure was repeatedly attacked in recent times.

The new railway will run through strategic areas that Russia controls such as Donetsk and Mariupol and Berdiansk in Zaporizhia.

Crimea is an important logistics center for Russian forces on the southern front of Ukraine.

`Russia has actually been building a railway for more than a year now to connect with the southern territories. The process is almost complete and it could cause serious problems for us,`

On March 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that construction of the railway section between Rostov-on-Don and Berdiansk was completed.

Andrii Yusov, spokesman for Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR), said on March 21 that the railway line that Russia is building is a serious challenge and an `important target` for Ukrainian forces.

Mr. Yusov said that because Ukraine frequently attacks Crimea, the Crimea bridge does not operate fully.

`Russia is not satisfied with what is happening with the Crimea Bridge. So they are trying to increase the rail connection (with the peninsula),` Mr. Yusov said.

Mr. Yusov said that Ukraine’s `mission` is to prevent Russia from completing the construction of the new railway line.

Previously, Yevgeny Balitsky, pro-Russian leader in Zaporizhia, said that building the railway would `solve the army’s problems`.

According to Balitsky officials, the new railway line will be a safe distance from the front lines of fighting, meaning Ukrainian shelling will not pose a threat to the trains.

When the railway is completed, Russia will easily move goods, military supplies, and weapons to the gathering point in Crimea more safely, reducing dependence on the Crimea bridge.

The 19km long Crimea Bridge or Kerch Bridge was built by Russia after annexing the peninsula in 2014. The bridge began operating in 2018 and is considered a vital route connecting mainland Russia with Crimea.

Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out, the Crimea bridge has been repeatedly attacked by drones or suicide boats.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 after a referendum not recognized by Ukraine and its Western allies.
